Local Google Guru - Changing Gears for 2009

How to be a Local Google Guru

When I first started doing free lance Business to Business Local Internet Advertising where I live in Frederick Maryland my thoughts were to keep my efforts local.

What I did was to offer Frederick Maryland small businesses that did not have an existing website a blogspot blog like this one to use as a company website. It wasn't until I approached Frederick's City Cab Company that I learned the best use of a blog for business promotion.

City Cab already had a company website, they had several actually; Limousine Service, Sedan Service, Advertising from a Truck (rolling billboard ad truck).

Blaine Young, one of the owners of City Cab Frederick let me do SEO on his existing sites, since I seemed to know what I was doing he let me make him a couple business blogs. I was in bad shape financially and didn't charge him much, so he paid me to do it.

At that time no one in the entire state of Maryland was using blogspot blogs in lieu of conventional websites. There were a few journalism type Wordpress blogs, but blogspot was considered to be more of a toy than a serious business Content Management System (A Wordpress blog IS a serious CMS).
They don't know Google the way I know Google...

While experimenting (full disclosure- I did this on City Cab's dime) with Blogger blogs I learned how to get a blog to OUTRANK a conventional website.

Everyone was surprised, I was, our competitors were... The consensus in the Search Engine Optimization field was that a blog would temporarily gain rank in Search Engine Results Pages, then degrade (loose rank) just as quickly as it skyrocketed past a conventional site.

Well... I found a way to get around that. The problem for me was that no one wanted to take a chance on it, I mean who was I?
Joe 'flash in the pan'?

Everyone thought it was just a fluke, no one wanted to believe that little old me, a guy down on his luck (didn't even own a car, went to sales calls on a bicycle) could out perform the large (expensive) glitzy web design bureaus (I don't even know how to spell bureau with out spell check)... yet here we are?
The business model I use is to create a set of blogs, a themed series of connected blogs, the net effect is to have Google identify my main site as a Frederick Maryland Portal or Frederick Maryland Authority Site.

It's obviously effective or you wouldn't be reading this.

While on my Quixotic Quest someone on Facebook asked me if I could get multiple rankings (4, 5 or 6 out of the top 10 search results) for his site, I responded,

Sure I can get multiple Google Rankings for your company website

Then I found out he was targeting the entire nation

...I'd not tried that... I didn't know if this technique would work in that venue.

For example I found it child's play to get a local mom and pop store to the #1 spot in Google/ Yahoo/ MSN / AOL. But some business have more competition than others.
the Moving industry was one of those toughies, so is Real Estate, Doctors, Lawyers, any industry where big enough money is involved for the heavy hitters to pay us super geeks what ever we ask.

I'd not attempted to get a site to rank nationwide or worldwide.

Well I'll be damned!

As of this writing I'm at #3, #5, 7, 8,9 & 10 out of Results 1 - 10 of about 9,220,000 for Maryland Internet Advertising.

SOoooo, since I now command the mighty Google as if I was a Lion Tamer, the focus of this blog is to teach people exactly how to use Blogspot blogs to dominate your local internet advertising market the way Frederick Web Promotions can.

The next few posts are going to be in the "How To" category.

I'm NOT going to tell you everything... not for free any way.

One of the latest in new products/ services search engine juggernaut Google™ recently rolled out is a personalized search modification they call SearchWiki.

What is SearchWIKI? Basically SearchWIKI is a customizable search engine. It’s estimated that nearly 80% of internet users interact with a search engine before any other website every time they log on to the Internet.

End users of Google know what they’re looking for and we need a way to help THEM find it.

Have you ever done a search for a moving company, say in Frederick Maryland? What the public is irritated with is the top ten results for a local business or service almost never display a local business or local service provider. Typically what Google returns as a search result is ten listings of moving company directories, NOT Frederick Maryland moving companies.

Why is that?

Simple, the online moving company directories are better SEO (search engine optimization) webmasters than the local web design guy who created the moving company website.

I don't know about you, but if I wanted to find a company to clean my widget, and all Google showed me was widget directories I'd be PO'ed too.
What happens is the better SEO webmaster is outranking the local guys and is offering the local yokels to pay up if they want to be on the first page.

I'd much rather search and go straight to a local company than click on a half dozen company directories, who wants to go through that many hoops? Isn't the point of the Internet to save time?

So how does searchWIKI change all that?

You don't like a search result? You can make it never show up on YOUR google search again. Really. SearchWIKI is customizable, you can personalize what comes up when you search. This amounts to your being able to "Vote" for the sites you want in Google!

    Fill up Google, Crowd out your competitors

    Every company should have a blog

    There are multiple reasons every company, even corporations, should have blogs in addition to their standard/ conventional website.

    There are marketing reasons that you'd want a blog and a website, for one thing you can follow up with customers that have purchased from you in the past.

    You can use a blog for Help wanted postings to assist in a free system of recruiting new employees, but those WEB2.0 strategies are for another post.

    This particular post is going to deal with the use of a blog in the advertising arena.

    What can you do with a blog that you can't do with a conventional website?

    For one thing the only way a website is going to get traffic is 2 ways:

    1.) Drive traffic to it offline, printing your url on brochures, invoices, business cards, advertising flyers

    2.) Search Engine Traffic, people type what they're looking for and if I've done my job YOUR website will show up at or near the top of the Google™ SERPS(S.E.R.P.s = search engine results pages)

    OK, so how is a blog any different?
    Many of you are thinking:
    "I mean blogs are for politics and online dating services, right?"

    Nope, well they are, but for OUR purposes blogs are absolutely GOLDEN!

    A conventional website can get indexed into Google™ in roughly 6 weeks. If you alter/ change/ update that same website it can take another 6 weeks for the changes to show up!

    A Blog on the other hand... it's SUPPOSED to get indexed daily because it's SUPPOSED to be updated at least a couple times a week. Google KNOWS this so GoogleBot comes around all the time!

    A Blog can get read in MANY other ways than just a web browser like Internet Explorer or FireFox. A blog can get read in an RSS reader, a Cell Phone too!!!

    That's right, Blogs are EASIER to download into a cell phone, because of RSS.

    It gets much, MUCH better for us Advertisers...

    Make a website and get a single listing in Google™.
    Make an internal page to that same website (any page that's not the 'home' page) and you might...maybe if you're lucky get ONE of those internal pages to rank in Google™.

    A blog??? every time you post an article Google™ considers it a NEW website.

    Make 6 posts to your blog and you'll stand a hell-of-a better chance of getting 3 of them ranked in Google™ ALL ON THE SAME serps page!!!!!

    Are you GETTING THIS?

    I'll spell it out: There are 10 listings on each Google search results page
    (more if there are any "Local business results for ___ ")

    So... You've already got 1 listing in Google™ for your existing website, the one that you had before you hired me, so that's 1 listing.

    Enter the business blog: Now in addition to that single listing you've got a listing for the new blog, a listing for the digital pictures that I took of your business or product, a listing saying that your blog is listed in a Separate Blog Search Engine

    That's right, there are different search engines JUST FOR BLOGS and those listing also show up in Google™ as a Google search result.

    It gets better folks...Blogs all originating from a single blog provider are given less wieght if there's too many of them with your company name on them. Google™ might consider them to be spam blogs, so what does that mean?

    Fill up the Google™ search results with MORE OF YOU and that leaves LESS OF YOUR COMPETITION.

    This is simple subtraction, it's a war of attrition, if every where your prospective client goes on the web all they seem to find is YOU, there you are again, and again???

    You MUST be important, apparently Google™ thinks so...I mean, you can't just waltz into Google™ and get multple listings can you?

    Here's what most every one goes through when they search Google for a supplier of a given widget or service:

    First they type in "Widgets"

    Then they realize that a "Widget" supplier in Oklahoma and another one in Florida doesn't do em any good if they're in Frederick County, Frederick Maryland.

    What do they do next?

    Why get a company blog?

    Your company already has a website.

    That website is already listed in Google (how high it ranks in Google is quite another story)

    Why in the world would you want to have a company blog?

    What IS a blog anyway?

    A blog, short for weblog, originally blogs were online journals, a kind of public diary... that all changed with the political process, Al Gore losing the presidential election in 2000 and the power of the Internet.

    The Republicans had talk radio (Rush Limbaugh, Bill Oriely)The Democrats had... zip (Dean? he hurt them more than helped them)

    Blogs had broken news stories, Blogs were suddenly the equal of the (shrinking) Big three networks... blogs were challenging the mighty cable news outlets.Everybody either had a blog, or they wanted a blog... they blogged on every topic under the sun.

    Google noticed this...

    Google bought the largest, most popular blog platform in the world:
    Google didn't stop there, Google also bought (a blog enhancment software, feedburner *supercharges* your blog)

    So what exactly is a blog now?
    it's a different platform, just like a Macintosh is not a PC but they're both computers.

    A blog is a website, but is a different platform, it's .xml as opposed to being in .html format.

    Which brings us back to the original question....

    Why does a company want a company blog?

    Websites take up to 6 weeks for Google/ Yahoo/ MSN Livesearch to index.Blogs get indexed within 24/48 hours, (less than that if you're sharp like Frederick Web Promotions )
    You make a company website for a product launch next week and your out of luck!

    You make a company blog with the explicit purpose of publicizing that product launch and Frederick Web Promotions can get it in Google in less than a week!

    Google will BE the next Ma Bell... Google is set to become THE PHONE COMPANY, Google is moving into cell phone software!

    What do you name your website?

    What do you call your company?

    Your name? Your name and what you do?

    Joe's Cleaning service
    or Mary's Candles

    That works fine for a sign that you put out on the parking lot of your place of business... but what do you call your website? ???

    Well, you could, but lets look at this from your prospective customers perspective.
    What would your next client type into Google if they were looking for a company to sell them what you sell?

    Here's what (keywords) a prospective customer is actually going to type:

    Cleaning services in Frederick Maryland

    And here's another thing to throw at you... what if there's a Joes Cleaning Service in Idaho or Michigan???

    Did you know that a website can have TWO names? (kinda)

    the url, the website address..
    and the website's title.

    You get two places to say what you gotta say with a website.

    So rather than say Joe's Cleaning Service
    you'd want to say: Joe's Cleaning Service Frederick

    that's better... now try this out:

    NOW that url is not going to have a bit of trouble ranking high in Google (locally)

    Here's an example of what I'm talking about... I used to drive a truck, I have a CDL, I worked for a hazardous waste removal company. I did their website over a couple years back

    The companies name was Bay Associates Environmental Inc.
    That name didn't exactly tell you what they do for a living does it?
    Their website name (url) was

    The name you give your site doesn't have to be the name of your company.
